About
iDance is an interactive improv music video creation with complete strangers on the streets of the world. Individuals on the streets are spontaneously approached and offered to film spontaneous music videos of them dancing through the streets. The idea is to enjoy the moment of dancing so that people passing by are inspired to join the dance. The music is played through portable speakers hanging on the neck of the camera operator allowing mobility to roam around the streets while filming a group of dancers who never knew each other before this engagement. The iDance project inspires spontaneous creativity and self expression through dance in the otherwise typical day.
iDance project was born when I wondered what if I approached people spontaneously on the streets and offered them to film spontaneous music videos of them dancing through the streets. I went out and bought Altec Lancing “inMotion” portable flat speakers for my mp3 player and the rest is history.
Initially back in 2005 the concept of the iDance project was as described below;
For the dancer; The idea is to block out any ego or insecurities you may have and imagine as if you are in a bubble, or some sort of vacuum ball that is rolling through the streets. As if the people who are walking by don’t really exist. However, you may interact with them and even invite to dance with you. The dancer has full control over where he/she wants to take the camera to show a story, either the story from the song or his/her own interpretation of it. The participants should come across as if they are aliens and their interaction with this world is a learning experience about humanity. The dancer interacts with people, animals, objects on the streets all while dancing toward the camera which is floating backwards leading the way for the dancer. After about 20-30 seconds into the song you smoothly disappear into the street crowd and that’s when the next dancer enters the picture. All this goes on until the song reaches the end.
However, over the years the idea has changed many times, and currently, the mission of the dancer is to dance and enjoy it to the point that smiling people passing by are inspired to join the dance.
